Conducting an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for borehole projects is crucial for several reasons, as it helps assess and mitigate potential environmental and social impacts.
EIA help identify and assess potential environmental impacts associated with borehole projects, such as habitat disruption, water quality changes, and soil erosion. This information allows for proactive measures to protect the environment.
In Kenya, it’s a legal requirement mandating EIAs for certain projects, including borehole installations. Failing to comply with these regulations can result in legal issues and project being given a stop order by National Environmental Management Authority.
Before commencing borehole drilling activities, EIA expert is sent to site to collect data and write an EIA report which is normally submitted to NEMA for purposes of issuance of NEMA License. This license gives the client the go ahead to drill the borehole within the recommendations provided in EMCA 1999.
